CB location (M5), Target Diamond (A5)

Practice this TML pattern on your table until each one becomes a known and trustworthy shot.

M5 to A5

10:30 & 1:30 Analysis

Critical to making this a consistent shot is 1 cue tip out from center. Given the distance, the cue stick was aiming at the diamond because there was enough cloth and time for the squirt and swerve to bring the cue ball back for a straight-on hit on the diamond.

When the ball comes into the 2nd rail at a shallow angle, the angle out tends to open a bit. There is less of a rebound because the rail absorbs some of the ball's energy.

12:00 Analysis

This is a basic straight back and forth. Shots like this are often recommended as a tool to train yourself to play a true center shot. That's a bunch of nonsense - since even a 1/8" off of perfect perpendicular (90 degrees) is difficult to achieve. When you have to shoot straight at a rail - find a target past the table and aim at the target.

Other Sized Tables

For 8 foot tables, the same type of pattern requires about 1-1/4 tips out from center to get the paths shown. For 7 foot tables, 1-1/2 tip out from center is necessary to follow the pattern. The distances on small tables are less, so when the cue ball travels around in a trapezoid pattern, the rail contacts are more distorted.
