(FAQ) How can you get stains out of table cloth?

(About the Author)

Over the long life of a pool table, there will be times when liquids get spilled on table beds due to carelessness. The liquids may be soda pop, coffee, tea, water, beer, or even (in rare circumstances) cat or dog elimination.

There are several recommended ways to clean most of these stains.

  • Spray brake cleaner on a micro fiber towel and scrub the cloth. Rinse with a towel dipped into hot water. Repeat as needed. (Test on a patch of left over cloth.)
  • Upholstery repair shop can steam clean the stain, followed by the whole table.
  • Pour some lighter fluid on a rag and rub in. Let air dry.

For general cleaning (every 3-4 months for a home table), run a hand vacuum over the table first. Dip a towel in a large bowl of hot water and press it down over the cloth. As the towel temperature cools, re-soak in the hot water and repeat until the entire table is damp. Dump the dirty water down the drain. (No one has ever published the results of how dirty chalk water affects living plants, so don’t use the water on plants.) This will also tighten up the weave as it dries, giving a faster roll. Let it dry (several hours) and the cloth will look more new.

If you are uncomfortable with cleaning stains or even general cloth cleaning, call your table mechanic. He can perform the necessary procedure while you watch and learn. After you learn once, you are good to go as long as you are responsible for the table’s good condition.
