If you know the enemy and know yourself ...

Hence the saying:

  • If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.
  • If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat.
  • If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.

Therefore, the reality is:

  • One who knows what the opponent can and cannot do and knows his own strengths and limitations will win the majority of all matches.
  • One who does not know the opponent but knows his own strengths and weaknesses will win about half the time.
  • One who does not know the opponent and does not know his limitations will lose most of the matches.
