Of all the overused words in the world of table billiards, the most common of all is, “Good Shot!” These and other pool phrases have become so common as to have lost all real meaning, from the provider or to the recipient.
Such words can be used as a sharking trick. Here are some examples that, with various emotional efforts can be distracting:
- Good luck.
- It could be worse.
- Better luck next time.
- Be careful.
- Good try.
Besides the varying enthusiasm levels, simply saying these excessively can be irritating – just because you know he is using these sportsmanlike words as a tool to frustrate.
It is the constant repetition that can wear away at your patience like water wears away rocks. A few here or there have little effect, but continuous use eventually cracks your wall of patience.
Response
Recognizing that these words are being used as another distractive tactic makes it easy to discount their value. Simply treating such comments as background noise eliminates their effectiveness.
An active approach would be to return these words back at his shots – but with more enthusiasm. You can even add more words to these to make these “digs” more effective.
