(S&D) Safety & Defense – Temptation Shot Tactics

Safety Toolbox (Advanced)

(This is today’s bit of advice from the book Safety Toolbox.)

When your opponent’s chaos zone has been defined, you can easily setup traps, known as temptation shots. These are hero shots just beyond your opponent’s abilities and control. They look within reach, but are tantalizing ghosts. He might succeed once in a while, but the odds are in your favor.

Each of the target balls in the graphic below would be considered excellent examples of a trap. Even good shooters would be hard pressed to consistently make these shots.

S&D Temptation Shot Tactics

S&D Temptation Shot Tactics

There are two aspects of temptation shots that are to your advantage. The shot is tougher, so your opponent must put more attention on trying to make the shot. Except for a natural roll, it is difficult to control the cue ball after contact with the object ball. If he tries to play position and pocket the ball, he fails in one intention if not both. Often, he chooses one – usually putting his attention on pocketing and hoping for the best.

When addressing this conflict of attention, he uses up brain energy. Even if he succeeds in both, he has less energy for the end of the match. If he takes the bait every time, you have identified a blind spot in his thinking. Be generous and continue offering these shots. He can help you win more games.
