(D&E) Drills & Exercises – Pocket Skills (progressive): Side Pocket (center spot) – Off Rail set

(About the Author)

This progressive exercise to improve your shooting skills is in the book Drills & Exercises for Pool & Pocket Billiards.

This setup concentrates on progressive pocketing skills. There is no concern about where the CB ends up.

This is a multiple cue ball speed and spin drill. See Cue Ball Speed and Spin Variations. Make sure to observe the cue ball action (path from OB, any rail action, etc.) until it stops. You need to remember the results when you are in competition.

The 1 ball is on the center spot. On this progressive drill, start with the cue ball straight across and in front of the side pocket.

The progressive cue ball zone is the entire right side of the table and turning the corners for 1 diamond.

Drills & Exercises – Pocketing Skills (progressive) – Center Spot to Side Pocket (off raile)

Instructions:
DONUTS: one of OB – one at each end of gray line.

  1. Start with CB straight across from OB. Now put the 1 Ball into the opposite side pocket.
  2. Re-spot 1 Ball. Move CB to left side 1/2 D. Each time you make the 1 ball, shift the CB down the line. Continue to a miss).
  3. To guarantee personal ownership, pocket the 1 Ball twice before shifting to the next cue ball location.
  4. Somewhere along the cue ball positions, you’ll hit a location that is tough to make the 1 Ball.

THAT is the limit of your Comfort Zone and the beginning of your Chaos Zone.

Suggestions: Start with a basic center ball at pocket speed (OB drops into the pocket). Then increase the speed up through Medium 3. Following success with various speeds, work with various side spins – i.e., 1/2 tip out 10:30 and 1:30.
