(FAQ) What about gambling?

(About the Author)

Gambling money on your table skills can sometimes be an opportunity to learn how you play under pressure, or simply be a way to pass some time for pocket change.

Your reaction to risking the available cash in your possession depends on your experiences and the amounts being risked. Here are a few suggestions and recommendations.

  • Long races. This allows skill to shine and decrease the opportunities for luck to impact the results. For example, a race to 11 would be whoever wins 11 games first. A “5 ahead” race would be to whoever wins 5 games ahead of the other person, whether it be 7 to 2 or 13 to 8.
  • Multiple barrels. This means you have enough reserves to suffer several losses and still be able to continue playing. Each barrel can be $5, $10, $50 or more. The requirement to enter the group might be the availability of a minimum number of barrels (5, 10, etc.).
  • Have an absolute limit. Do not go beyond this pre-set limit. Basically, only play what you can afford to lose, and if that goes – go home. If winning, stay as long as you can play.

There are a few minimal rules you should keep in mind. If you exceed these common sense guides, you will know better the next time.

  • Know the skills of your opponent.
  • When comparing skills, use the lower end of your regular speed.
  • Play the games you are comfortable with.
  • Keep your bets comfortable.
  • Be careful about drinking.
  • Agree before starting on who pays table time.

These are just rough ideas, suggestions, and recommendation – all meant to be a guiding light to your explorations into the world of pocket billiard gambling. Good luck and don’t take any bets with no reality to back up a loss.
