This is today’s bit of advice from the book Safety Toolbox.
The distance safety type is simple and easy to set up. It does not require careful or accurate ball management skills. When you can’t think of anything clever, leave a long shot. This makes it a low percentage shot for him with a good chance for you to immediately come back to the table.
Most players can develop a consistent skill in making balls within a half table area. The ball travel distances are not far and therefore easier. When the distances increase, accuracy drops off. The chances of missing increase as the shot falls into the shooter’s chaos zone.
Distance can be intermixed with other safety types. For example, combine it with a bad angle shot to reduce the chances of success to near zero. Use this with a frozen cushion shot to increase the difficulty factor. The fusion of several types adds to a player’s frustration level.
This is another tool to wear down your opponent. These shots always require using some extra brain energy to concentrate on the shot. As a tactic, it prevents a giveaway table and can generate a safety battle which plays to your strengths.
