(S&D) Safety & Defense – Opponent Analysis

(About the author)

Safety Toolbox (Advanced)

(This is today’s bit of advice from the book Safety Toolbox.)

“Know your enemy” has been a basic principle of strategic and tactical warfare planning throughout history. Understanding your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses helps you develop effective plans to defeat him.

When playing any opponent, you need sufficient information to make wise playing decisions. At the general level, you need to determine a variety of details. Among these are

  • General intelligence level – can he recognize when changes are necessary or does he blindly follow a single playing pattern?
  • Pocketing skills – what can he do and not do?
  • Cue ball handling abilities – what can he do and not do?
  • Defensive skills – is he imaginative and clever or simplistic and susceptible?
  • Strategic and tactical planning abilities – does he think his way through the game or does he simply react to circumstances?

Top players are unforgiving. They will take control with the simplest opening and win from a single mistake. Against better players, tighten up your safeties and make them as precise as possible.
